This contribution grew (and grew) out of a joint workshop between GEOTRACES and Past Global Changes (PAGES) held in Aix-en-Provence in December 2018. The workshop was funded by the US National Science Foundation (NSF) through the GEOTRACES program, the international PAGES project, which in turn received support from the Swiss Academy of Sciences and NSF, and the French national program LEFE (Les Enveloppes Fluides et l'Environment). This study was undertaken as part of the Past Global Changes (PAGES) project (and its working group LandCover6k). The classification presented here is the result of extensive discussion, argument, and compromise. Archaeological and historical synthesis of this type, and on this scale, is unprecedented, and we acknowledge the range and depth of intellectual contributions to this work.
