1. Call for contributions to Past Global Changes Horizons vol. 2

Many of you have seen the first issue of the new magazine published by PAGES in April - Past Global Changes Horizons: Picture the past. Change the future.

Past Global Changes Horizons is a popular science magazine aimed primarily at the younger generation, budding scientists, and all those enthusiasts, both young and old, who are interested in or want to learn more about the science of the past.

The deadline for the call for contributions for first drafts for volume 2, to be published in June 2022, is 15 September. > All details

2. PAGES-IAI Fellowship Program - apply by 30 September

PAGES and the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) are pleased to announce a new fellowship opportunity for Latin American and Caribbean early-career scientists.

The International Mobility Research Fellowship Program supports Latin American and Caribbean early-career scientists pursuing international research experience in paleoscience. It will cover the costs associated with travel and living expenses while abroad. This program, which will run for a minimum of two years, will support up to six fellowships per year.

The call for applications is now open. Fellowships will be awarded for a short duration (one to three months) and must be used within 12 months. The deadline for applications is 30 September at 23:00 UYT (02:00 UTC 1 October). > All details

3. AGU21 abstracts due 4 August

Submit abstracts by 4 August for the AGU Fall Meeting to be held online and in New Orleans, USA, from 13-17 December 2021. > Calendar

4. Next deadlines for PAGES applications - 20 September

The next call for applications for new PAGES working groups and financial support to hold a workshop or meeting closes 20 September. You must contact a PAGES SSC member at least two weeks before the deadline to advise them of your plans.

5. PAGES' 6th OSM & 4th YSM in May 2022

PAGES' 6th Open Science Meeting (OSM) and 4th Young Scientists Meeting (YSM) will be held in May 2022 in Agadir, Morocco. The new tentative dates are YSM: 15-17 May 2022; OSM: 17-21 May 2022. Field trips start from 22 May.

The events were postponed from May 2021 because of coronavirus health and travel restrictions. These tentative dates will be reassessed again in August, when we'll hopefully have a better idea of how the situation is unfolding.
> Keep up to date with all announcements and find out more about the program

6. Call for interest and potential collaborators on paleo manuscript

Two PAGES community members, Xavier Benito and Nick Schafstall, seek the community's interest and potential collaborators for a short manuscript "Ten simple rules to reach an audience outside the paleo-scope" about the practical ways of how paleoecology and ecology, geosciences, and perhaps other fields, can inform each other's approach. It is challenging to show the relevance of paleoecology to e.g. ecologists due to multiple reasons (e.g. nature of evidence, methodological differences). They are of the opinion that one way to reach a larger audience outside their field with relevant research is to publish in journals outside the paleo-scope. However, especially for ECRs it can be difficult to determine in what ways their research is relevant to other fields. Subsequently, it is even more challenging to get their manuscript accepted for review in a journal outside the paleo-scope. Xavier and Nick are searching for the 10 most relevant tips on how to get your paleoresearch published in journals outside the power of the prefix "paleo". All kinds of tips are welcome, and will be ranked according to a survey amongst paleoresearchers. Please send your tips or recommendations before 6 September to Nick, with the topic "10 simple rules survey". With these results, they will submit a short 'perspectives' manuscript to a relevant journal.

This hybrid workshop aims to define proxy criteria and a conceptual database structure. > Calendar
b. Status update: Shortly after the ACME WG was launched in 2020, leaders undertook an anonymous community survey and had a dedicated session at EGU 2020, CR 7.1 Cryosphere Change Impacts on Marine Ecosystems and Biogeochemical Cycling, co-organized by Ocean Sciences, Cryosphere Sciences and Biogeosciences. The main results of the community survey have been incorporated in an invited review that the steering group have recently written titled "The potential of palaeoecology to predict the future of coastal marine ecosystems in the rapidly changing Arctic" which is in review in the journal Anthropocene. Leaders will keep you updated on the status of this publication where ACME members and anonymous survey participants will be duly acknowledged. They will also discuss the main findings of this survey at the workshop (point a., above), as a starting point for further discussions.
