PAGES Newsletter April 2024
As we near the end of April, the PAGES IPO would like to take this opportunity to remind the paleocommunity that the deadline for PAGES Open Science Meeting (OSM) session proposals is 15 May! There are also a number of interesting webinars and workshops being planned by the PAGES Early-Career Network, as well as PAGES working groups. And last, but not least, there are lots of interesting new working group publications.
Please note that at the end of April – beginning of May 2024, the annual PAGES Scientific Steering Committee (SSC) meeting will be taking place in Morocco, as well as a PAGES Scientific Symposium. This also means that the newsletter for May 2024 will be a slightly shorter one.

1. PAGES' 7th Open Science Meeting (OSM): Session proposal deadline
The PAGES' 7th OSM will be taking place from 21–24 May 2025 in Shanghai, China, and online. The deadline to submit session proposals is 15 May 2024. In addition, we encourage all PAGES working groups to inform the PAGES IPO if your group is planning to host a workshop or meeting before or after the OSM. 2. Special Issue of Past Global Changes Magazine: Vol. 32 (1): (Paleo)-Earthquake and -Tsunami science
The spring issue on (Paleo)-Earthquakes and -Tsunamis will be out very soon, and available to read online. In this issue readers can find “a wide range of techniques to study recent (years to decades ago) and (pre)historical earthquakes and tsunamis performed in diverse terrestrial and aquatic settings. The studies presented cover regions that are characterized by high recurrence rates of seismic (and related tsunami) activity, as well as those with large time gaps between events. A broad variety of different methodologies is included, all aiming to better understand location, timing, and recurrence rates of earthquakes and tsunamis. Novel concepts and methodologies, as well as challenges regarding the identification of the seismic and tsunami hazard in the geological record, are presented." 3. PAGES 10th webinar
To celebrate the release of the PAGES Magazine on (paleo)-Earthquakes and Tsunamis, PAGES is organizing a webinar on 8 May at 05:00 UTC (please note that this means 7 May for those on the US West Coast). The webinar is in collaboration with some of the authors who contributed to the Special Issue and speakers include Jamie Howarth (Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand), Siddharth Prizomwala (Institute of Seismological Research, Gandhinagar, India) and Belle Philibosian (U.S. Geological Survey). > Calendar
4. Past Global Changes Horizons Magazine
a. Past Global Changes Horizons is a popular science magazine aimed primarily at the younger generation, budding scientists, and all those enthusiasts both young and old who are interested in, or want to learn more about, the science of the past. The third issue will be published in July 2024 with the central theme on how studying past extreme wet and dry phases aids our understanding, and informs future action, on floods and droughts under the current global change. The third issue editorial team is Juan A. Ballesteros-Cánovas, Gerardo Benito, Ivan Hernández-Almeida, Graciela Gil-Romera, Marie-France Loutre, Ray Lombardi and Keely Mills. > Access past Horizons issues
b. For a fourth issue of Horizons magazine, PAGES now requests that those interested contact the IPO with a full proposal, including a magazine topic, confirmed editorial team, and list of authors. 5. Congratulations to SSC members
PAGES would like to congratulate two of its current PAGES Scientific Steering Committee (SSC) members; Aixue Hu on his role of becoming an Ocean Knowledge Action Network (Ocean KAN) Steering Committee member and Shiling Yang in his new role as Editor for Climate of the Past. We wish both Aixue and Shiling all the best in these positions.
6. PAGES Mobility Fellowships
The deadline for both the Inter-Africa Mobility Research Fellowship Program for African early-career researchers (ECRs) and the International Mobility Research Fellowship Program for Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) ECRs is on 15 August. These mobility fellowships aim to contribute to the development of collaborative research and the promotion of paleoscience networks in the African and LAC regions. > More information
7. PAGES Scientific Symposium
There will be a one-day Scientific Symposium taking place on 2 May at the Faculté des Sciences et Techniques (FST) in Marrakech, Morocco, on the occasion of the annual SSC meeting. > Calendar

9. PAGES working group mailing lists: FAQs
PAGES has been experiencing some mailing lists challenges. Specifically, for a time, it was very difficult to log into, or subscribe to mailing lists without a University of Bern email address. However, a solution has now been provided by the University for both new subscribers and for mailing list administrators/moderators. We have summed up the answers in a short FAQ for both those who wish to subscribe, as well as working group mailing list moderators and administrators. > Mailing list FAQs

i. 2k Network
Konecky B et al. have published a paper in Nature Geoscience on "Globally coherent water cycle response to temperature change during the past two millennia". > Access article
ii. Climate Variability Across Scales (CVAS)
The group has announced the launch of the CVAS seminar series which will focus on climate model development and tuning, a key aspect of CVAS phase 3. The aim is "to foster engaging discussions by inviting experts in climate model development to share insights into their work's history, philosophy, and the challenges they face. Specifically, we seek to explore the ability of climate models to simulate potential instability, or whether they were "Built for stability". The inaugural seminar will take place on 2 May at 15:00 CET (13:00 UTC) with Gerrit Lohmann and Lars Ackerman from the Alfred-Wegener-Institute, who will delve into the topic of “Climate-cryosphere interactions in AWI-ESM”. > Calendar

A paper has been published in Global and Planetary Change by Sánchez-García C and Schulte L on "Historical floods in the southeastern Iberian Peninsula since the 16th century: Trends and regional analysis of extreme flood events". > Access article

v. PALeo constraints on SEA level rise (PALSEA-Next)
a. PALSEA and Rutgers Earth System Science & Policy Lab are calling for interest in a virtual workshop about spatio-temporal hierarchical modeling for paleo sea-level data. This workshop will be held on either 11–12 or 18–19 June 2024, “followed by another 2-hour drop-in session for any additional questions (if required). The workshop will cover basic concepts about Bayesian analysis, hierarchical modelling, spatiotemporal data analysis, and multiple modelling and analysis choices for paleoclimate data, including temporal and spatio-temporal Gaussian Process models (with hands-on practice). Please note that the deadline to submit an abstract for the 3rd INQUA-PAGES ECR workshop “Tropical hydroclimate variability in the Quaternary: Insights from proxies and models, and the way forward (TROPQUA 2024)" has been extended to 30 April. The International Union for Quaternary Research (INQUA) and Past Global Changes (PAGES) will be hosting a joint Early-Career Researcher (ECR) workshop on "Tropical hydroclimate variability in the Quaternary: Insights from proxies and models, and the way forward (TROPQUA)" will take place from 3–7 November in Goa, India. iii. Landscapes Live seminar series
Landscapes Live is a weekly online seminar series, affiliated to the Geomorphology division of the European Geosciences Union (EGU). The seminars are focused on various aspects of geomorphology and are freely accessible to the international scientific community. The talks are held virtually on Thursday’s at 16:00 CEST (14:00 UTC). iv. Reminder: Pythia Cook-off hackathon for geoscientific Python Cookbook development
Project Pythia is the education working group for Pangeo and is an educational resource for the entire geoscience community. It is home to Python-centered learning resources that are open-source, community-owned, geoscience-focused, and high-quality. They will be hosting a Cookbook Cook-off hackathon from 11–14 June in Boulder, Colorado, at the NCAR Mesa Lab, or virtually via Zoom. This event will benefit students, researchers, developers, and professionals across a variety of coding skill levels interested in online learning resources in open geoscientific computing. i. Carbon in Peat on Earth through Time (C-PEAT)
There is a special call for manuscripts for a new journal with the title “Critical Insights in Climate Change”. This journal will be launched by Taylor and Francis in May 2024 and the editorial team (“some of whom are C-PEATers”) are requesting contributions for the first edition. Taking place on 29 April from 09:30–11:30 CET (07:30–09:30 UTC), this webinar “will spotlight reflections from the perspective of those with direct experience of living or working with Indigenous communities. It will discuss what it means to ethically engage with Indigenous knowledge holders and how to navigate responsibilities to develop reciprocal relationships with these communities in ways that do not perpetuate extractive, colonial frameworks”. iv. Pathways Autumn School
Applications are now open for the Future Earth 2024 edition of the Pathways Autumn School "Transformative Research for a Just World and a Habitable Planet". The Autumn School will enable participants "to share and reflect on the ways sustainability science can contribute to transforming societies towards new models which strive to achieve social equity and meet basic needs for all, while safeguarding the planet’s ecosystems and climate." The summer school is open to Doctoral researchers and researchers who finished their PhD within the last 10 years (excluding periods of parental leave), living and working in Europe. The program is now available for the 2024 Sustainability Research and Innovation (SRI) Congress which will be taking place from 10–14 June in Helsinki & Espoo, Finland. The PAGES-supported meeting "Lima: 2024 ANDEX Annual Meeting; Huaraz: Primer Taller Andino de Glaciología e Hidrología de Montaña" will be taking place from 27 May – 1 June in Lima, Peru. ANDEX is the Regional Hydroclimatic Program for the Andes created by GEWEX-WCRP and aims "to become a regional hydroclimatic programme of reference constituted by a consolidated and articulated scientific community that responds to the needs of society and contributes to planning and decision-making for the sustainable development of the Andean countries". > Calendar
iii. IBS Conference on Climate and Human Evolution
The IBS Center for Climate Physics (CCP) will be hosting a conference on "Climate and Human Evolution" from 15–19 October in Busan, South Korea. The aim of the conference is to discuss how "evidence has been mounting that past climate changes played an important role in the evolution of our genus, Homo. However, identifying and quantifying the impact of climatic and environmental changes on human speciation, adaptation, migration, and cultural development has remained challenging. In this conference, we will bring together experts from various disciplines, including paleo-climate, anthropology, archaeology, ecology, climate modeling, and genomics, to advance this emerging field and to forge new collaborations." > Calendar

v. OnSea Workshop: Coastlines in a changing world
The first International ONSEA Workshop “Coastlines in a changing world: Seascape evolution during the Late Quaternary” will be held in Montpellier, France, from 11–12 October. The workshop aims to create a forum on a range of thematic topics related to environmental changes of coastal areas and their relation with anthropogenic activities, including Paleo-environmental reconstruction of coastal areas; Coastal geoarchaeology; Records of sea-level changes and paleo sea-level studies; Adaptation of coastal communities to climate and coastal changes; Use of new technologies in coastal studies; and Interdisciplinary collaboration in coastal research.
