The PAGES-endorsed International Paleofire Network (IPN) will host a monthly online seminar series beginning in May 2021 to foster knowledge exchange and promote discussion across worldwide paleoscience communities interested in paleofire research.

Logistics

Each seminar will be broadcast via Webex at 21:00 CEST (19:00 UTC) and will consist of a 20-30 minute talk followed by an open discussion period.

Description

Recent years and decades have witnessed increasingly destructive wildfires, sparking much discussion regarding the causes and impacts of fire. Further the role of humans in fueling these fires, both directly via land management and ignition as well as indirectly via anthropogenic climate change, is a dynamic and exciting field of study. Yet, fire has occurred in the Earth System since the Paleozoic Era and has played a part in shaping our biosphere and atmosphere. The paleofire field seeks to leverage environmental archives to better contextualize and understand the fires we see in the modern day.

This seminar series will offer a discussion forum and focus on paleofire methods, new directions, and applied research spanning many spatial and temporal scales. ECRs are especially encouraged to attend and learn from established and emerging leaders in the field.

Fourth speaker - 9 September

The fourth event will be held on 9 September at 21:00 CEST (19:00 UTC).

Abraham Dabengwa from the School of Animal, Plant & Environmental Sciences, Univ. Witwatersrand, South Africa will present:

“Influence of grass layer flammability and palatability on prehistoric fire records from selected African grassy biomes”
