The meetings and discussions in Lima will be hybrid and discussions will be open to online attendants.
The workshop in Huaraz includes hands-on exercises and intense field activities. Online participation will be difficult at this stage, but teaching material will be made available for future reference.
Description
ANDEX is the Regional Hydroclimatic Program for the Andes created by GEWEX-WCRP. During the 2024 Annual Meeting in Lima, Perú, the Scientific Committee and project leaders and collaborators from the different Andean countries will discuss the current state, challenges and opportunities of the ANDEX program, together with the strategic plans and research activities for the coming period.
ANDEX’s vision is to become a regional hydroclimatic programme of reference constituted by a consolidated and articulated scientific community that responds to the needs of society and contributes to planning and decision-making for the sustainable development of the Andean countries. Water security for Andean populations and high impact hydroclimatic events are its two main themes of research, production and dissemination of knowledge and information.
After Lima we will have two workshops that will run in parallel and deal with Andean glaciology and hydrology (Huaraz), and transdisciplinary research in the context of ANDEX (Cuzco). These events are not only intended for ANDEX members but also for young scientists from the Andean countries.
Post meeting training activities
In addition, and for the first time since the creation of ANDEX, three simultaneous training activities have been planned for the days following the meeting in Lima. Between May 30 and June 1, an interdisciplinary workshop will be held in Cuzco for ANDEX team members. Meanwhile, a glaciology and mountain hydrology workshop will take place in Huaraz, mainly for advanced students and young researchers from the Andean countries. The third activity is a visit to the possible GLAFO site that the Instituto de Geología del Perú -IGP- has in Huancayo.

The ANDEX Scientific Committee attending the meetings is composed by Paola Arias – Universidad de Antioquia, Colombia; Germán Poveda – Universidad Nacional de Colombia; Daniel Pabón – CIIFEN, Ecuador; Norma Salinas – Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú; Jorge Molina and Isabel Moreno – Universidad Mayor San Andrés, Bolivia; Silvina Solman – Universidad de Buenos Aires, Argentina; René Garreaud – Universidad de Chile; Anna Stewart – Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research, Uruguay; Peter van Oevelen – International GEWEX Project Office, USA. We are also inviting 18 colleagues (all from the Andean countries) that have been coordinating the different ANDEX groups.
