Description

The IAVCEI (International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth's Interior) Commission on Tephrochronology will be organizing an international conference from 8–15 September 2024 in Catania, Sicily. 

The three themes include: Tephrostratigraphy and Tephrochronology, Tephra and Climate, and Tephra and Volcanology. 

 

Join COT’s international meeting in the shadow of Mount Etna. The conference is dedicated to the diverse applications of tephrochronology across numerous fields. This conference blends presentations with workshops and field trips to offer an exciting opportunity to share research and expand your knowledge.

Sun 8 September: Workshops and evening welcome party 
Mon 9 September: Talks and poster sessions
Tue 10 September: Mid-conference field trip to Mount Etna 
Wed 11 September: Talks and poster sessions
Thu 12 September: Talks and poster sessions, closing party
Fri 13 - Sun 15 September: Post-conference field trips (optional)
 

Sessions and Themes

1. Tephrostratigraphy and Tephrochronology
Classic applications, advances in geochronology, dating and correlation.
2. Tephra and Climate
Insights on volcano-climate and climate-volcano interactions.
3. Tephra and Volcanology
Uses for constraining magnitude, frequency, hazards, ash modelling etc 

Field Trips

Mid-Conference
Field trip to Mount Etna and excursion to the Biancaville-Montalto ignimbrite. Followed by vineyard tour and wine tasting.
Post-conference (Option 1)
Two day field excursion in the Aeolian Islands.
Post-conference (Option 2)
Interactions between volcanism, tectonics, sea level and climate (Etna, terraces and the Plio-Pleistocene boundary).
