About ESEH

The European Society for Environmental History (ESEH) promotes the study of environmental history in all academic disciplines and encourages anyone who has an interest in the field to join and become involved.

ESEH aims to:
> encourage the study of European environmental history in a comparative perspective;
> foster communication among environmental historians across Europe, and with colleagues elsewhere;
> promote the further institutional development of environmental history within secondary and tertiary education;
> promote the research and use of environmental history in academic programmes;
> strengthen the crucial link between environmental history, all policy-making, and the general public.

The Society aims to stimulate dialogue between humanistic scholarship, environmental science and other disciplines. It welcomes members from all disciplines and professions who share its interest in past relationships between human culture and the environment.

13th ESEH Conference

ESEH 2025 will be a hybrid conference with possibilities for in-person and virtual attendance. It is being organized with the goal of fostering collaborations between research, the arts, and the public with the intent to inspire broader public conversations about the history and experience of climate change. We strive to ensure a sustainable, ecological, and inclusive experience through the planning of this event.

ESEH 2025 is organized through a partnership between several universities and organizations:

  • European Society for Environmental History
