The European Pollen Database (EPD) is an important research and educational tool as well as data repository. Its usefulness requires contributions from the paleoecological community, while providing a useful resource. This interaction between data producers and users was discussed at an open meeting in Aix-en-Provence in 2007 and led to a new open structure in its development and administration. The purpose of this meeting is to create new momentum and interest early career scientists to support and work with the EPD, while educating all paleoecologists on how to better use the EPD in their own research and teaching.
This meeting, to be held at Centre Universitaire Montperrin, Aix-en-Provence, France, will develop the following aspects of the database:
1. The inclusion of pollen data from previous interglacials. These periods are of great interest in the understanding the current interglacial, but few of the important long time pollen datasets are included in the database.
2. The inclusion of new proxies such as non pollen palynomorphs (NPP). These are increasingly held in the EPD, but work is needed to make these data accessible and to explore signals across sites and regions.
3. Increase coverage of data from other regions where scientists may have had limited opportunities to engage with the wider community. The EPD holds pollen data from North Africa and the Near East due to floristic similarity and the activities of European researchers. We aim to make the EPD a resource that will help integrate researchers from these regions into the community and enable them to use regional data stored in the database, while sharing their own data.
Workshop topics
Workshop topics include: Tilia and neotoma; charcoal software and database; surface samples for "analogue" reconstructions, LandCover6k using LRA: PPEs, REVEALS, LOVE; help in pollen and NPP identification; using the EPD with ‘R’; and age depth modeling.

We encourage researchers from North African and Near East countries to attend. Limited funds are available to support travel and/or accommodation for young researchers and those from outside the EU/Schengen. Please apply with your registration stating the reasons why and how much support is requested.
