Data stewardship scholarship project

C-SIDE was awarded a Data Stewardship Scholarship in May 2022.

Data steward

Dr. Lena Thöle (Department of Earth Sciences, Utrecht University, Netherlands)

Goal

During Phase 1 of the C-SIDE working group, our primary goal was to establish a dataset of sea-ice proxy sites in the Southern Hemisphere to reconstruct sea ice over a full glacial-interglacial cycle.

Phase 2 of the C-SIDE working group involves the compilation, analysis, and publication of a second data product involving the compilation of complementary datasets that support and aid in the interpretation how sea ice changes are related to changes in regional temperature and biogeochemical processes.

This work has been initiated by ECR Lena Thöle (Postdoctoral Fellow, Utrecht University), Zanna Chase (University of Tasmania), and Karen Kohfeld (SFU). This subgroup has been working on development of the SST data project design and analysis.

Phase 2 also involves the incorporation of (a) a newly-developed sea-ice proxy from radiolarian assemblages (ECR Vikki Lowe, Australia), and (b) radiolarian-based reconstructions of subsurface temperatures (ECR Dr. Matthieu Civel, Japan) for the SW Pacific and Indian Ocean sectors of the Southern Ocean.

This work will be completed as part of C-SIDE during May-September 2022 in Vancouver, Canada. C-SIDE received a second data stewardship fellowship for ECR Dr. Lena Thöle, so that she can dedicate full time to the development and documentation of these C-SIDE datasets. This effort will involve using LiPD to format the new sea-surface temperature compilation, supporting biogeochemical and 13C data, and the new (regional) subsurface temperature compilation (for Indian Ocean and SW Pacific Sectors). She will also work on conversion of the sea-ice data compilations into the LiPD format to maximize their opportunity for use by the paleoscience community.

Repository

We have explored LiPD formatting for the planned data products and intend to use them while also archiving these data with PANGAEA.

Final products

Planned final products: The first data product is the compilation of associated SST data at Southern Ocean sites for the time period of 0-150,000 years. The second data product involves the conversion of the existing sea-ice proxy data set into the LiPD format. The third product will involve assistance with formatting and submission of the subsurface temperature data, working with ECRs Lowe and Civel. If time, the final product will involve work with the biogeochemical flux data. The Data Stewardship Scholar (Dr. Thöle) will insure data quality and formatting these data products using LiPD.

C-SIDE was awarded a Data Stewardship Scholarship in May 2021.

Data steward

Matthew Chadwick has been serving as our Data Steward since 2021 but will step down from this post beginning April 2022. The Steering Committee is currently considering replacements for this role.

Goal

To establish a dataset of sea-ice proxy sites in the Southern Hemisphere that allow one to reconstruct sea ice over a full glacial-interglacial cycle; to develop a secondary data product to derive changes in regional temperature and biogeochemistry; and to examine additional complementary data for the understanding of the relationship between sea-ice changes and biogeochemical processes.

Repository

PANGAEA (to be confirmed)
LiPD (to be confirmed)

Final products

A sea-ice proxy dataset including sites that cover the last 150,000 years will be produced and made publicly available. For the same time period, associated SST data at Southern Ocean sites will be compiled. Future work will include incorporation of the biogeochemical flux data intended.
