Classifying past land use

In a recent contribution to LandCover6k in Anthropocene, Kay and Kaplan synthesize the archeological record in sub-Saharan Africa to review prehistoric and historic land use systems.

They present a classification system that could be applied in a range of studies that seek to quantitatively categorize, map, and model past land use and land cover, or indeed in any study which seeks to understand how humans have transformed the planet at any point in time.
