In a new contribution to our Regional Integration Theme, John Dearing et al. present regional case studies combining paleorecords with conventional sources of historical information to show how multiple sources of data may aid the understanding of social-ecological system dynamics and thus research into sustainable management of landscapes, ecosystems, and resources.
